THE VIRGINIAN IS PAINED THIS MORNING TO ANNOUNCE THE DEATH OF ONE OF NORFOLK'S OLDEST CITIZENS, MR. JESSE JONES WHICH OCCURED AT HIS LATE RESIDENCE ON BREWER STREET LAST EVENING AT 6:30PM. MR. JONES AT THE TIME OF HIS DEATH WAS 76 YEARS OF AGE AND HAS CONDUCTED THE GRAIN AND FEDED BUSINESS IN THIS CITY FOR MANY YEARS.

WE REGRET TO ANNOUNCE THE DEATH OF NAVAL CONSTRUCTOR GEORGE FAYETTE MALLETT, WHICH SAD EVENT TOOK PLACE  YESTERDAY 7AM. AT HIS RESIDENCE IN THE NORFOLK NAVY YARD.

CORONER H.F. MATHEWS DIED LAST NIGHT AT 7:15 PM AT HIS RESIDENCE ON THE CORNER OF WASHINGTON AND SOUTH STREETS. HE WAS FOR THE PAST 30 YEARS CORONER OF THIS CITY AND FOR 25 YEARS HIGH CONSTABLE. HE HAS BEEN FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS A CONSISTENT MEMBER OF THE CENTRAL M.E. CHURCH. THE DECEASED WAS ONE OF OUR OLDEST CITIZENS AND WAS HIGHLY RESPECTED IN THE COMMUNITY. HE WAS ABOUT 70 YEARS OF AGE AND LEAVES A WIFE AND NO CHILDREN.

REV. DR. BLACKWELL RETURNED YESTERDAY FROM FAUQUIER COUNTY WHERE HE WAS IN ATTENDANCE UPON THE FUNERAL OF HIS BROTHER.

THE FUNERAL OF MRS. LAURA V. WIFE OF JAMES W. TAYLOR TOOK PLACE YSTERDAY MORNING FROM THE RESIDENCE OF HER HUSBAND 514 HENRY STREET AND WAS LARGELY ATTENED.

THE FUNERAL OF MILLS EURE TOOK PLACE YESTEDAY AFTERNOON AT 3PM FROM HIS LATE RESIDENCE IN NEWTOWN AND WAS ATTEND BY THE UNITED ORDER OF AMERICA MECHANICS IN A BODY, AFTER WHICH HIS REMAINS WERE INTERRED IN PORTLOCK CEMETERY.

CHARLES KELLAM, ADMINISTRATOR, IS SUING THE FIRM OF G. & R. BARRETT FOR $2,000 DAMAGES FOR A TRUCKMAN EMPLOYED BY THEM RUNNING OVER AND KILLING THEIR LITTLE BOY CHARLIE ABOUT 2 MONTHS AGO. AT THIS WRITING THE CASE HAD NOT BEEN GIVEN TO THE JURY.

THE FUNERAL OF MRS. ANNIE E. JONES THE DAUGHTER OF THOMAS WHITEHURST, FORMERLY OF THIS CITY BUT RECENTLY OF DEEP CREEK WHO DIED ON SUNDAY, TOOK PLACE YESTERDAY FROM THE RESIDENCE OF HER HUSBAND IN THAT VILLAGE. HER REMAINS WERE INTERRED IN PORTLOCK'S CEMETERY OF THIS CITY OF THIS CITY.

THE FUNERAL OF CORONER HERMAN MATTHEWS TOOK PLACE ON SUNDAY FROM HIS LATE RESIDENCE ON THE CORNER OF WASHINGTON AND SOUTH STREETS. REV. F.M. EDWARDS OFFICIATING. HIS REMAINS WERE INTERRED IN CEDAR GROVE CEMETERY.

YESTERDAY MORNING ABOUT 6PM A COLORED MAN NAMED CHARLES WRIGHT STARTED TO NORFOLK TO GO TO WORK, NEAR CRAWFORD, HE WAS SEEN TO FALL. SOME ONE WENT TO HIS ASSISTANCE BUT WHEN THEY REACHED HIM HE WAS DEAD.

RACHEL ANDERSON COLORED, AGED 73, WHO WAS BADLY BURNED A SHORT TIME AGO, DIED AT HER RESIDENCE FROM THE EFFECTS OF HER INJURY.

THE FUNERAL OF LITTLE WALTER, AGE 6.5 MONTHS OLD SON OF MR. & MRS. MARMADUKE BROWNLEY TOOK PLACE YESTERDAY FROM THE RESIDENCE ON CLIFFORD STREET.

WE REGRET TO LEARN FROM THE PENINSULA ENTERPRISE THAT MRS. HENRIETTA SCARBURGH A LADY OF MANY EXCELLENT TRAITS OF CHARACTER, THE WIFE OF DR. GEORGE T. SCARBURGH AND DAUGHTER OF MR. JOHN J. BLACKSTONE DIED AFTER A LINGERING ILLNESS.

MONDAY'S ALEXANDER GAZETTE SAYS. MR. W.C. DEXTER A TRAVELING AGENT FOR A NORFOLK FIRM, WHO HAS BEEN STOPPING AT THE BRADDOCK HOUSE FOR SOMETIME PAST, AND WHOSE ILLNESS WAS MENTIONED IN THE GAZETTE ON SAT. LAST , DIED  THAT NIGHT AT THAT PLACE ABOUT 8:30PM. FROM CONSUMPTION. HIS REMAINS WERE TAKEN TO MESSRS. DEMAIN & SON'S UNDERTAKING.

PORTSMOUTH:
A COLORED WOMAN NAMED MARY WATKINS WAS FOUND DEAD YESTERDAY AT HER RESIDENCE ON THE EXTREME END OF QUEEN STREET.

IT'S ANNOUNCED THAT DR. THOMAS F. ANDREWS A FORMER CITIZEN OF NORFOLK DIED IN BALTIMORE WED AFTERNOON AND HIS REMAINS ARE TO BE BROUGHT HERE FOR INTERMENT.

MESSRS. GASKIN AND STURTEVANT POPULAR UNDERTAKERS HAVE OFFERED TO BURY THE YOUNG MAN SEVERN WHITEHEAD FROM HIS RESIDENCE AT 1219 GREEN STREET 3PM. ( THEY TOOK UP A PUBLIC COLLECTION TO PAY FOR IT.)

JAMES NORCUM, COLORED PROMINENT MAN IN THE A.M.E. CHURCH DIED FRIDAY. HE WILL BE BURIED THIS AFTERNOON BY THE DIFFERENT ORDERS OF WHICH HE IS A MEMBER.

MR. S.A. HANEY OF THE SIGNAL OFFICE HAS THE SYMPATHY OF OUR WHOLE COMMUNITY IN THE AFFLICIOIN WHICH HAS BEFALLEN HIM IN THE DEATH OF HIS YOUNG AND DEVOTED WIFE. THE FAIR YOUNG BRIDE OF A FEW YEARS NOW RESTS IN OAKDALE, BESIDE HER SISTER MRS. RHODES WHO WAS TOUCHED BY THE BLIGHTING HAND OF DEATH BUT TWO  YEARS SINCE. THE FUNERAL SVC TOOK PLACE FROM ST. PAUL'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH OF WHICH MRS. HANEY WAS A MEMBER. MRS. HANEY WAS THE DAUGHTER OF MR. GEORGE HARDWICKE OF THE STAR NEWSPAPER AT WHOSE HOME SHE DIED. WAS A NATIVE OF LYNCHBURG VA AND WITH HER PARENTS HAD BEEN A RESIDENT OF THIS CITY FOR ABOUT 10 YEARS.

WILLIAM ACKESS A WELL KNOWN COLORED MAN WAS BURIED YESTERDAY AFTERNOON. HE HAD ACCUMULATED CONSIDERABLE PROPERTY.

ON TUES NIGHT AT 11PM. MR. VIRGINIUS MURPHY A YOUNG MAN AND POPULAR GENTLEMAN, PASSED QUIETLY AWAY. HE WAS 30 YEARS. OLD. HAVING LEARNED THE TINNERS TRADE WHEN A BOY, HE WORKED AT IT UP TO ABOUT 6 YEARS AGO, WHEN HE WAS ELECTED FIREMAN OF THE STEAMER VIRGINIA OF THE INDEPENDENT FIRE COMPANY OF THIS CITY WHICH PLACE HE HELD AT THE TIME OF HIS DEATH. ALTHOUGH UNABLE TO WORK THESE PAST 12 MONTHS, THE COMPANY AT IT'S LAST ELECTION, RE-ELECTED HIM AND GAVE HIM THE PRIVILEGE OF PUTTING ON A SUBSTITUTE. HE WAS A MEMBER OF THE MONTAUK TRIBE OF RED MEN AND PORTSMOUTH LODGE NO. 16 K OF P. HIS FUNERAL WILL TAKE PLACE TODAY FROM HIS LATE RESIDENCE ON COUNTY BETWEEN MIDDLE AND COURT STREETS 3PM.

YESTERDAY AT 9AM, AS MRS. HENRIETTA LAWRENCE WIFE OF WILLIAM LAWRENCE WHO RESIDES AT EAST CRABBE STREET WAS ATTENDING TO HER HOUSEHOLD CHORES, SHE FELL TO THE FLOOR AND EXPIRED IN A FEW MINUTES FROM THE PARALYSIS OF THE HEART SHE WAS 68. SHE IS A SISTER OF MESSRS WILLIAM O.B. AND SMITH SHERWOOD, ALSO STEP MOTHER OF MRS. D.J. TURNER OF NORFOLK. HER FUNERAL WILL TAKE PLACE ON FRIDAY AT 3PM. FROM THE COURT STREET BAPTIST CHURCH.
