THE FUNERAL SERVICES OF OUR LATE WELL KNOWN TOWNSMAN H. EBERHARDT TOOK PLACE FROM
THE COURT STREET PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH YESTRERDAY AFTERNOON AT 2:30PM. REV. DR. GEORGE D. ARMSTRONG CONDUCTING SERVICES. ME. EBERHARDT WAS WELL KNOWN IN THIS SECTION OF HIS VARIED AND EVENTFUL LIFE AS A NATIVE SWITZERLAND A RESIDENT OF PARIS AND SEVERAL AMERICAN CITIES AN AS A VETERAN OF THE ARMY OF THE GREAT NAPOLEAN UNDER WHOM HE SERVED AS A ARMY TAILOR. HE DIED ON WED MORNING QUIET SUDDENLY BUT WAS ATTENED BY HIS FAITHFUL WIFE IN HIS LAST MOMENTS. HE LEAVES A WIDOW AND A SON A RESIDENT OF BALTIMORE WHO ARRIVED HERE FRIDAY MORNING TO ATTEND THE FUNERAL THE WIFE OF THE DECEASED IS NATIVE OF WELDON NC. AND A VERY ESTIMABLE LADY.

YESTERDAY MORNING ABOUT DAYLIGHT A MAN NAMED WOOD WHO LIVES IN BERKLEY AND IS EMPLOYED IN THE NAVYYARD AS A WORKMAN ATTEMPTED TO CROSS THE RIVER IN A SMALL ROW BOAT ALONE BUT THE SKIFF WAS CAUGHT IN THE ICE AND HE WAS UNABLE TO GO IN EITHER DIRECTION. HE REMAINED THERE SOME TIME AND WAS FINALLY DISCOVERD BY THE MEN  OF THE RECEIVINGSHIP FRANKLIN AND A BOAT WAS SENT TO RESCUE HIM WHICH WAS UNABLE TO MAKE HER WAY THROUGH THE ICE ALTHOUGH MANNED BY 6 SAILORS. A STEAM TUG FROM THE NAVY YARD WAS SENT OUT AND THE MAN WAS TAKEN ON BOARD THE SHIP AND RESTORATIVES ADMINISTERED BUT BEFORE HE COULD BE CONVEYED TO HIS HOME HE DIED FROM THE EFFECTS OF THE COLD.

WE DEEPLY REGRET TO ANNOUNCE THIS MORNING THE DEATH OF CHARLES O'NEIL. THE SAD OCCURENCE TOOK PLACE AT HIS RESIDENCE IN THIS CITY AT 2:30PM YESTERDAY AFTERNOON AFTER A BRIEF LLNESS FROM PNEUMONIA.

THIS VENERABLE GENTLEMAN, AUGUSTE AMILE PIGGEON SO WELL KNOWN TO OUR COMMUNITY DIED THURS MORNING AT THE HOSPITAL OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL AFTER AN ILLNESS OF SEVERAL WEEKS. MR. PIGGEON WAS A NATIVE TO TRINIDAD BUT ARRIVED WITH HIS PARENTS IN NORFOLK WHEN BUT A MERE YOUTH. HE WAS FOR MANY YEARS A MERCHANT , DOING BUSINESS SON CAMPBELL'S WHARF WHEN HE REMOVED TO NEW ORLEANS AND ENGAGE IN THE COTTON BUSINESS. NOT BEING SUCCESSFUL HE RETURNED TO HIS OLD HOME. WHERE HE HAS SINCE RESIDED  ESTEEMED AND RESPECTED BY ALL. HIS FUNERAL WILL TAKE PLACE THIS MORNING AT 10AM. FROM ST. MARY'S CHURCH.

INFORMATION OF THE DEATH OF DR. J.C. BAYLOR REACHED HIS FRIENDS IN THIS CITY ON MONDAY NIGHT. DR. BAYLOR DIED IN DENVER COLORADO, ONMONDAY OF TYPHOID FEVER. HE WAS A FORMER PROMINENT CITIZEN OF NORFOLK HAVING MOVED TO THE WEST ONLY A FEW MONTHS SINCE ON ACCOUNT OF HIS HEALTH. AT THE TIME OF HIS DEPARTURE FROM OUR CITY HE OCCUPIED THE POSITION OF HEALTH OFFICIER AND WAS ONE OF OUR MOST HIGHLY ESTEEMED PHYSICIANS. HIS DEATH WILL BE LAMENTED BY A HOST OF FRIENDS.  note: remains arrived 01.25.1879 & buried ST. PAUL'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH,

MR. WILLIAM  P. VAUGHAN DIED AT HIS RESIDENCE IN MIDDLESEX CO ON MONDAY LAST AFTER A BRIEF ILLNESS OF PHEUMONIA. THE DECEASED WAS A HIGHLY PROMINENT CITIZEN OF HIS COUNTRY AND A HIGHLY ESTEEMED GENTLEMAN WHOSE DEATH IS A CAUSE OF DEEP REGRET AMONG THOSE TO WHOM HE WAS KNOWN. HE WAS THE FATHER OF CAPTAIN R. FRANK VAUGHAN OF THIS CITY, WHOSE MANY FRIENDS HERE WILL BE DEEPLY GRIEVED TO LEARN OF THE SAD LOSS HE HAS SUSTAINED IN THE DEMISE OF A BELOVED PARENT. THE DECEASED WAS 74.

MR. CHARLES RAMSEY DIED AT HIS RESIDENCE ON THE CORNER OF FENCHURCH AND BERMUDA STREETS YESTERDAY AFTERNOON AT 7PM. IN THE 72ND YEAR OF HIS AGE. THE DECEASED WAS AN OLD RESIDENT OF NORFOLK AND HAD A HOST OF FRIENDS IN THE CITY. AT THE TIME OF HIS DEATH HE OCCUPIED THE POSITION OF WOOD MEASURER HAVING BEEN ELECTED AT THE LAST MUNICIPAL ELECTION BY AN EXCEEDINGLY LARGE VOTE. HIS FUNERAL WILL TAKE PLACE SUNDAY AT 3PM. DURING THE WAR HE SERVED IN THE CONFEDERATE ARMY AND AFTERWARDS LOCATED IN LYNCHBURG  AND ENGAGED IN MERCANTILE BUSINESS.

A COLORED MAN NAMED PETER SMITH WHILE AT WORK ON BOARD A VESSEL LYING AT HARRISON'S WHARF YESTERDAY MORNING WAS SEIZED WITH A FIT, FELL OVERBOARD BETWEEN THE VESSEL AND THE WHARFT AND WAS DROWNED. THE DECEASED WAS ABOUT 30 YEARS OF AGE AGE AND MADE HIS LIVING BY WORKING AROUND THE WHARVES UNLOADING AND LOADING VESSES ETC. HE WAS SUBJECT TO EPILEPTIC FITS.   

A FAIR HAVEN CONNECTICUT, 17 YR OLD BOY, NAMED S.L. PEWTRESS JOINED WITH A NUMBER OF OTHER SMALL BOYS IN A WALKING MATCH. THE LITTLE FELLOWS STRIPPED OFF THEIR OUTER GARMENTS AND REMOVED THEIR SHOES. PEWTRESS TOOK A CHILL WHILE OVERHEATED WITH EXERCISE AND THE COLD SETTLED IN HIS BOWELS PRODUCING AN ACUTE INFLAMATION WHICH TERMINATED IN DEATH.

IN WILLMINGTON NC. APRIL 14TH A SPECIAL DISPATCH TO THE MORNING STAR STATES THAT D.J. WILLIAMS, A MERCHANT AT LAURINBURGH IN THIS STATE, WHILE ENGAGED IN CLOSING HIS STORE SATURDAY NIGHT WAS SHOT AND KILLED BY H. OGELBY. THE SHOOTING WAS THE RESULT OF AN OLD GRUDGE. OGELBY IS IN JAIL.

PETERSBURG VA: DR. R.H. SPENCER A WELL KNOWN AND PROMINENT PHYSICIAN OF DINWIDDIE COUNTY DIED VERY SUDDENLY ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON WHILE RIDING HOME FROM A POLITICAL MEETING AT CHERRY HILL, IN DINWIDDIE COUNTY. AT THE TIME OF HIS DEATH HE WAS RIDING HORSEBACK, WHEN HE SUDDENLY DROPPED DEAD IN THE SADDLE AND FELL OUT IN TO THE ROAD. THE DECEASED WAS ABOUT 40 YEARS OF AGE AND LEAVES A WIFE AND 3 CHILDREN. HIS DEATH IS THOUGHT TO HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY HEART DISEASE.
