Departed this life at 6:50AM TUESDAY at his residence NO. 66 CHURCH STREET. EDWARD F. APPLEWHITE After a brief illness. The Deceased has been in a very delicate health for the past 2 years which he withstood without ever murmuring  and always a smile and kind word for any friend with whom he might meet. HE was born in the VILLAGE OF CHUCKATUCK NANSEMOND COUNTY IN 1824 and there was educated. IN 1842 HE REMOVED TO PORTSMOUTH VA. AND SERVED HIS APPRENTICESHIP AS A SMITH. AT THE OUTBREAK OF OUR CIVIL STRUGGLE HE MARCHED TO THE FRONT WITH THE UNITED ARTILLERY CAPTAIN THOMAS KEVILL AND MANFULLY WITH HIS COMMAND DID HE BATTLE FOR HIS COUNTRY'S RIGHTS AND AFTER SERVING TO THE BITTER END WAS  HONORABLY PAROLED AND RETURNED TO NORFOLK VA. WHERE HE RESIDED UP TO HIS DEMISE AS A GOOD CONSCIENTIOUS AND HONORABLE CITIZEN. HIS FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD TODAY AT 3PM. AT CHRIST CHURCH.  PHILADELPHIA PAPERS PLEASE COPY.

ON SUNDAY MORNING THE BODY OF A DROWNED MAN WAS FOUND IN THE RIVER JUST BELOW THE END OF CHURCH STREET. DR. JAMES D. GALT CORONER WAS NOTIFIED AND AN INQUEST WAS HELD. THE JURY RETURNED A VERDICT OF ACCIDENTAL DROWNING. SEVERAL COLORED PERSONS RECOGNIZED THE BODY AS BEING THAT OF DAVID CORNICK A NEGRO WHO HAS BEEN MISSING FROM SOME FORM HIS HOME IN THIS CITY. THE BODY HAD BEEN IN THE WATER FOR SOME WEEKS AND WAS BADLY DECOMPOSED IT WAS TURNED OVER THE CITY AUTHORITIES FOR INTERMENT.

LAST EVENING AT 7:30PM MRS. ANN S. PUSEY AGE 71. THE FUNERAL WILL TAKE PLACE FROM CHRIST CHURCH THIS AFTERNOON AT 4PM.

IT IS WITH REGRET WE ANNOUNCE THE DEATH OF CAPTAIN FREDERICK WILLIAMS A MOST ESTEEMED AND VENERABLE CITIZEN WHICH OCCURED YESTERDAY AT HIS LATE RESIDENCE ON BUTE STREET AFTER A LINGERING ILLNESS OF MORE THAN 2 YEARS. HE HAD REACHED THE RIPE AGE OF 77 YEARS, HONORED AND RESPECTED BY ALL WHO KNEW HIM. HE WAS A NATIVE OF DROCHTERSEN, KINGDOM OF HANOVER GERMANY BUT FOR THE PAST 57 YEARS A RESIDENT OF NORFOLK.  relatives may email for rest.

DURING WHICH LINE HE WAS PROMOTED FROM THE RANK OF ORDERLY SERGEANT TO THAT OF SENIOR FIRST LIEUTENANT AND FREQUENTLY HAD COMMAND OF THE COMPANY. BAIRD, A WELL KNOWN AND HIGHLY ESTEEMED CITIZEN OF NORFLK WAS RECEIVED HERE BY TELEGRAPH YESTERDAY FROM DEL NORTE, RIO GRANDE COUNTY COLORADO AT WHICH PLACE THE SAD EVENT OCCURED ON THE MORNING OF THE 15TH ISNTANT. MR. BAIRD WAS A MEMBER OF THE FIRM OF BAIRD & ROPER OF THIS CITY AND WAS HIGHLY RESPECTED BY ALL KNEW HIM. HE REMOVED WITH HIS WIFE TO COLORADO DURING THE PAST WINTER FOR THE BENEFIT OF HIS HEALTH, WHICH HAS BEEN FAILING FOR SEVERAL YEARS. HIS REMAINS ARE NOW BEING CONVEGED TO PHILADLEPHIA WHERE THEY ARE EXPECTED TO ARRIVE ON SATURDAY NEXT AND WHERE THEY WILL BE INTERRED THAT CITY BEING THE NATIVE PLACE OF THE DEPARTED GENTLEMAN. THE DECEASED LEAVES A YOUNG WIFE AND TWO CHILDREN TO MOURN HIS UNTIMELY DEMISE.

HE WAS AT ONCE PLACED IN A HACK AND CONVEYED TO HIS RESIDENCE ON BANK STREET. BEFORE THE VEHICLE HAD REACHED HIS HOME HOWEVER HE BREATHED HIS LAST. DYING IN ABOUT 15 MINUTES AFTER HE WAS FIRST TAKEN SICK. DRS. H.M. NASH , W.J. MOORE AND ALEX TUNSTALL WERE CALLED IN AND WE LEARN THAT IT IS THOUGHT THAT THE DECEASED DIED OF HEART DISEASE OF WHICH HE SUFFERED SEVERAL TIMES IN THE PAST.  HE WAS ABOUT 32 YEARS OF AGE. AND WAS A MEMBER OF SEVERAL SECRET ORDERS OF THIS CITY. HE LEAVES A WIFE TO WHOM HE HAD NOT BEEN MARRIED MORE THAN 12 MONTHS.

WE ARE PAINED TO ANNOUNCE THE DEATH OF CAPTAIN WILLIAM T. HARDING LATE OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES NAVY WHO DIED LAST EVENING AT 7:20PM AT ST. VINCENT DE PAUL HOSPITAL AFTER A LONG AND PAINFUL ILLNESS. HE WAS 37 YEARS OF AGE AND FOR THE PAST 12 MONTHS WAS A CONFIRMED INVALID. HE WAS THE SON OF CAPTAIN HARDING FOR MANY YEARS HARBOR MASTER AT THIS PORT.  AT THE BEGINNING OF THE LATE WAR HE JOINED THE CONFEDERATE STATES NAVY AND SERVED UNTIL ITS CLOSE, WHEN HE TOOK COMMAND OF THE STEAMER RALEIGH OF THE PIONEER TRANSPORTATION COMPANY.

ON NOV. 15 1877 EDWARD S. LANGDON OF BATTERY C. 5TH ARTILLERY WAS STRUCK ON THE HEAD LAST NIGHT WITH AN IRON BAR BY MUSICIAN COGNO OF THE BAND AND DIED THIS AFTERNOON FROM HIS INJURIES. COGNO ESCAPED AND HAS NOT BEEN ARRESTED.

IN PORTSMOUTH THE FUNERAL SERVICE OF THE LATE MRS. CARMI A . HUNTER TOOK PLACE YESTERDAY AFTERNOON AT THE FAMILY RESIDENC EON NORTH STREET 3:15PM. THE REV. B.H. OWEN ASSISTED REV. J.D. POWELL OFFICIATING. REMAINS TO CEDAR GROVE CEMETERY FOR INTERNMENT.

DIED IN THIS CITY AT THE RESIDENCE OF HIS SON IN LAW COL. G.W. MC CLANHON, AT 6:30AM MONDAY NOV 6TH ZEBULON L. SIMMONS OF BERTIE COUNTY NORTH CAROLINA AGE 79 YEARS 8 MONTHS. THE DECEASED HAD BEEN FOR 44 YEARS A CONSISTENT AND EXEMPLARY MEMBER OF THE M.E. CHURCH SOUTH AND HIS DEATH WILL BE DEEPLY LAMENTED BY HIS EXTENSIVE CIRCLE OF AQUAINTANCES AMONG WHOM THE MINISTER OF HIS OWN CHURCH IN VIRGINIA AND NORTH CAROLINA ARE LARGELY REPRESENTED. HIS REMAINS WERE CONVEYED  YESTERDAY VIA THE S. & R.R.R. TO HIS FAMILY BURING GROUND IN WINDSOR NORTH CAROLINA AND COMMITTED TO MOTHER EARTH BESIDE HIS BELOVED WIFE TO AWAIT THE RESURRECTION OF THE JUST.

SATURDAY A COLORED MAN FROM BERKLEY NAMED ALEXANDER BOUSH WAS DROWNED IN NORTH CAROLINA. HE WAS EMPLOYED ON THE TUG R.T. WATERS TOWING RAFTS FOR JOHNSON BROTHERS SAWMILL AND ACCIDENTALLY SLIPPED OFF A LOG INTO THE WATER. HIS BODY HAS NOT YET BEEN RECOVERED HE LEAVES A WIFE AND SEVERAL CHILDREN IN BERKLEY.

THE MANY FRIENDS OF CAPTAIN W.H. JARVIS A GALLANT GENTLEMAN IN THIS CITY WILL REGRET TO LEARN OF HIS DEATH WHICH OCCURED IN THE CITY OF DANVILLE ON FRIDAY LAST. CAPTAIN JARVIS WAS A NATIVE OF PETERSBURG AND WAS A HIGHLY RESPECTED AND CLASSIC OF CITIZENS IN THAT COMMUNITY.
AT THE BREAKING OUT OF THE LATE WAR HE WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN RAISING A VOLUNTEER INFANTRY COMPANY OF WHICH HE TOOK COMMAND WHICH ENTERED THE CONFEDERATE SERVICE WITH THE 12TH VA REGIMENT AT NORFOLK. HE WAS FOR MANY YEARS CHIEF ENGINEER OF THE FIRE DEPARTMENT OF PETERSBURG. HE WAS BETWEEN 50 & 60 YEARS OF AGE.

ONE OF THE MOST EXTRAORDINARY SCENES IT HAS EVER BEEN OUR LOT TO WITNESS TOOK PLACY YESTERDAY AFTERNOON AT THE CUMBERLAND STREET M.E. CHUCH OF THIS CITY. IT WAS THE OCCASSION OF THE FUNERAL OF MISS MOLLIE L. WININGDER, WHO WAS SO BRUTALLY MURDERED IN HER FATHER'S HOUSE ON SUNDAY LAST BY BENJAMIN F. GODFREY A REJECTED LOVER.

THE remains of landsman THOMAS ARMSTRONG and the sailor CARSON which were sent up from KITTY HAWK were buried by a detachment of marines from the navy yeard yesterday. they were interred inthe national cemetery with the usual honors.
