ABOUT HALF PAST 2AM. YESTERDAY MORNING A PARTY OF NEGROES NINE IN NUMBER, WHO HAD BEEN ENGAGED IN LOADING THE BALTIMORE FRIEGHT STEAMER ELLA KNIGHT ON THIS SIDE OF THE RIVER, STARTED IN A ROW BOAT OWNED BY THE TILLEY BROTHERS OF BERKLEY AND ROWED BY A NEGRO MAN NAMED JOHN STEVENSON FOR THEIR HOMES IN PORTSMOUTH, THE BOAT WAS IN BAD CONDITION AND LEAKED AND BEFORE THEY HAD ACCOMPLISHED HALF OF THE JOURNEY A COLLISION WITH A RAFT CAUSED HER TO FILL ALMOST INSTANTLY AND GO DOWN. THE WEATHER WAS VERY THICK AND THE RAFT WAS NOT SEEN UNTIL THE COLLISION HAD OCCURED. THE WHOLE PARTY WERE RECIPITATED INTO THE WATER AND 5 OF THEM WERE DROWNED. THE CRIES FOR HELP BROUGHT ASSISTANCE FROM VESSELS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD, AND FIVE WERE RESCUED SOME OF THEM CLING TO THE BOAT AND OTHERS TO THE RAFT. THE NAMES OF THE DROWNED MEN AND GEORGE BLOW, HENRY BROWN, CARTER MARTIN, CONWAY STAINBACK AND MILES FOULK. THE OTHER PARTIES IN THE BOAT WHO WERE SAVED, WERE JOHN STEVENSON, THE OARSMAN: ISAAC PROTLOCK, JOHN THOMAS DAVID GRAHAM AND THOMAS TAYLOR.

FROM INFORMATION RECEIVED YESTERDAY WE REGRET TO LEARN THAT MISS MARY QUICK THE UNFORTUNATE YOUNG LADY ALLUDE TO IN OUR LAST AS HAVING BEEN OUTRAGED NEAR BENNNETTSVILLE S.C. ON SATURDAY LAST AND WHOSE THROAT WAS SUBSEQUENTLY CUT BY THE IN HUMAN MONSTER WHO ASSAULLED HER HAS SINCE DIED OF HER INJURIES.

WE REGRET TO LEARN OF THE DEATH OF CAPTAIN EDMUND TANNABILL, WHICH OCCURED IN THIS CITY ON YESTERDAY MORNING AT THE RESIDENCE OF HIS BROTHER IN LAW. MR. HENRY PLUMMER. THE DECEASED WAS WELL AND FAVORABLEY KNOWN IN THIS SECTION.

THE REMAINS WERE ESCORTED TO THIS CITY BY  BY SEVERAL BRETHREN OF THE MASONIC ORDER OF RALEIGH. THEY WERE ON ARRIVAL TAKEN TO THE RESIDENCE OF MAJOR EDWARD KEARNS ON LONDON STREET FROM WHENCE THE FUNERAL WILL TAKE PLACE TODAY.

INFO HAS BEEN RECIEVED IN THE CITY OF THE DEATH OF RICHARD M. GRAVES ESQ OF CHARLES CITY C. DECEASED WAS FOR SOME 20 YEARS A MEMBER OF THE COUNTY COURT OF CHARLES CITY. UNDER THE OLD SYSTEM WHEN THE BEST CITIZENS WERE SELECTED FOR THAT POSTION. HE WAS ALSO SHERRIFF OF THE COUNTY FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS AND WAS ONE OF THE MOST ENTERPRISING AS WELL AS UP RIGHT MEMBER IN THE LAND , A VA GENTLEMAN OF OLD SCHOOL. HE WAS AN UNCLE OF MR. GEORGE L. CHRISTIAN CLERK OF THE COURT OF APPEALS AND NEAR RELATIVE OF JUDGE CHRISTIAN OF THAT COURT. RICHMOND ENQUIRER.

YESTERDAY MORNING AT 9AM. MRS. TINDALL WHO RESIDES AT NO. 406 THIRD STREET SOUTH EAST DISCOVERED IN THE CISTERN IN THE REAR OF THE ADJOINING HOUSE THE DEAD BODY OF MRS.ELLEN B. ROPER AN OLD LADY WHO HAS BEEN RESIDING THERE FOR SOME TIME.

IT WILL BE REMEMBERED THAT 3 OR 4 YEARS AGO A MOST DIABOLICAL MURDER WAS COMMITTED IN CUMBERLAND NEAR THE ROBESON LINE. TWO GENTLEMAN NEARLY 80 YEARS OF AGE BY THE NAME OF MCLEOD WERE KILLED AT THEIR RESIDENCE BY RUFFIANS IN QUEST OF MONEY SUPPOSED TO BE IN THE POSSESSION OF THE OLD MEN, WHO HAD A DAY OR TWO PREVIOUS MADE A SALE OF SOME LANDS.

BY THE ARRIVAL ON YESTERDAY MORNING OF THE TUG E. LUDLOW AND THE BARGE NEUSE BELONGING TO THE PIONEER TRANSPORTATION LINE OF THIS CITY, WE OBTAINED THE PARTICULAR OF THE DROWNING OF CAPT. DAVID CROKER ONE OF THE OLDEST CAPTAINS IN OUR HARBOR IT IS SUPPOSED AND FEARED BY FOUL PLAY AND THE SUBSEQUENT DROWNING OF HIS SUPPOSED MURDERER, A NEGRO BY THE NAME OF EDWARD WHITEHURST, ALSO BELONGING TO THIS CITY.

TWO YOUNG MEN INA PRIVATE BOARDING HOUSE IN THIS CITY HAD A SLIGHT DISAGREEMENT YESTERDAY MORNING IN WHICH ONE OF THEM BECOMING GREATLY IRRITATED TOOK A PISTOL FROM A DRAWER, AND AIMING IT AT HIS OPPONENT, DREW THE TRIGGER. FORTUNATELY A MUTAL FRIEND SAW THE ACT, AND THROWING UP THE WEAPON, CAUSED THE BALL TO LODGE IN THE WALL PROBABLY SAVING THE LIFE OF ONE OF THE PARTIES AND OTHER PARTIES AND THE OTHER FROM AN ACT WHICH WOULD HAVE EMBITTERED ALL HIS DAYS.

THE 2ND MATE OF THE BRIG EUGENIA.LYING IN THE STERAM AT THIS PORT WHILE ENGAGED IN SOME WORK ON THE SIDE YESTERDAY FELL OVERBOARD AND WAS DROWNED . HIS FALL WAS SEEN AND EVERY EFFORT WAS MADE TO RESCUE HIM, BUT WITH OUT SUCCESS, AS HE DID NOT RISE TO THE SURFACE AFTER FALLING. THE DECEASED WAS A PRUSSIAN BUT WE COULD NOT LEARN HIS NAME.  ALL EFFORTS TO RECOVER HIS BODY WERE UNSUCCESSFUL UP TO A LATE HOUR.

THIS COMMUNITY WAS SHOCKED YESTERDAY MORNING BY THE ANNOUNCEMENT THAT MR. W.L. G. KENT RECENTLY SHERIFF OF NORFOLK COUNTY AND RESIDING ON LAMBERT'S POINT HAD COMMITTED SUICIDE BY SHOTTING HIMSELF THROUGH THE HEAD WITH A PISTOL. THE RUMOR WAS TOO WELL FOUNDED HAVING TAKEN PLACE AT HALF PAST 8 O'CLOCK, THE UNFORTUNATE MAN LIVING ONLY ABOUT AN HOUR AFTER THE OCCURRENCE. THE RELATIVES OF THE DECEASED HAVE BEEN TELEGRAPHED FOR AND WILL PROBABLY BE HERE TODAY. RUMORS ARE CONFLICTING AS THE THE CAUSES WHICH LED TO THE RASH ACT.
