JAN 13 1872 SATURDAY
One of our old landmarks the REV. WILLIAM KNOTT died yesterday morning about 3:30AM at the age of 64 years of age. During the last sleet he fell down has been confined ever since from injuries received by his fall and a week ago pneumonia set in and carried him off. Mr. KNOTT was born in NORFOLK COUNTY and moved to PORTSMOUTH about 40 years ago. He has held prominent positions in our city and for years was an alderman and also amember of the city council. He was also a local preacher in the METHODIST PROTESTANT CHURCH. His funeral will take place tomorrow sunday at 3pm from the Central M.E. CHURCH.

WHERE HE WON THE ESTEEM AND RESPECT OF THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY. HE RETURNED TO NORFOLK SOME 5 YEARS AGO. AND HAS BEEN LIVING HERE SINCE UP TO THE TIME OF HIS DEATH. MR. KELLINGER WAS A MASON IN EMINENT STANDING AND A MOST EXEMPLARY MEMBER OF THE BAPTIST CHURCH.

CADET J.D. JOHN SON OF MOBILE ALABAMA DIED AT THE VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE ON FRIDAY MORNING LAST OF SCARLET FEVER. HIS REMAINS WERE TAKEN TO NORFOLK FOR INTERMENT. THAT PLACE WE UNDERSTAND WAS THE FORMER RESIDENCE OF HIS FAMILY. IT IS STATED THAT ALL THE FAMILY OF THIS YOUNG MAN EXCEPT ONE INCLUDING HIS FATHER DIED WITH THIS DISEASE.

THE FUNERAL OF THE DECEASED TOOK PLACE YESTERDAY AFTERNOON FROM ST. PAUL'S CHURCH, DURING LIFE HE WAS A DEVOUT AND CONSISTENT MEMBER.

We neglected at the time to notice the death of MR. J. WILEY HOWARD after a long illness from consumption and he was buried on the 4th of july. At the breaking out of the war he JOINED  COMPANY D. 61 Virginia Regiment FROM PORTSMOUTH and continued  with the regiment until the battle of spotslyvania  courthouse where he lost a leg. weakness and ..... caused by the loss of his leg brought on consumption and after a lingering illness he died on the 3rd. He was a good soldier and has gone to his (blurry).

WILLIAM was killed near PETERSBURG.
ALLEN fell at the side of his brother LEVI, who that day solitary and alone buried him.
STEPHEN was killed in battle on the same day, but his body was never aftewards seen by his friends. FERGUSON WHO belonged to the western army died iof disease at vicksburg miss. anthony die d of disease early int the war at NEWBERN.
THREE -to wit- THOMAS,SAMUEL AND LEVI SURVIVED the war and returned to their home and parents and now reside in ORANGE, respected and esteemed by all their acquaintances. Thus one mother given to the lost cause five grown up sons, who now sleep in honored graves in NC,VA AND MS.
