LEWIS LINDSEY THE NORTORIOUS NEGRO POLITICIAN OF RICHMOND LYING VERY ILL AND A REPROT PREVAILED ON WED THAT HE HAD DIED.
Another frightful accident occured on the MISSISSIPP CENTRAL RAILROAD ABOUT 2AM SUNDAY in wich the fireman named BRYANT colored was killed and the engineer WILLIAM H. MILLER was severely injured. At the time mentioned while the regular passenger train bounded north proceeding at the usual rate of speed towards HOLLY SPRING the engineer who was keeping a sharp lookout as the night was dark rainy and stormy suddenly observed that the trestle work over a creek about 7 miles below HOLLY SPRINGS had been washed away. He immediately whistled down brakes but the signal was given too late.
The engine was reversed and everything done on the part of the engineer who stood nobly at his post but all proved of no avail, and the locomotive and tender plunged into the gully which was about 8 feet in depth. the baggage car fell on top of the tender and lite platform of the first passenger car were smashed into splinters. but the passengers cars fortunately for the inmates remained on the track and althought all the passengers were a good deal shaken by the conclusion none were injured. when the engined plunged into the gully the fireman was caught between the engine and tender and curshed is such a horrible manner the the died about an hour after the accident occured.

We regret to announce this morning of the death of M.R G.W. SHELLCUP of this city, which occurred about 6pm last evening. the deceased was the first assistant engineer of the fire department of this city and his funeral will be attended by the firemen in a body. the fire dept of NORFOLK are also invited to be present. the funeral will take place at 2pm on sunday afternoon from the late residence of the deceased in GOSPORT.

A funeral notice in our issue of yesterday informed the public of the untimely death of one of our townsmen, who though quiet and unobtrusive in his manner, was rickly entitiled to the gratitude and respect of the citizens of Norfolk. We speak of MR. JOHN PATTEN , an adopted citizen who in the late struggle shouldered his musket in the 6th Virginia Infantry and fought bravely to the bitter end. Since that time he has served the city faithfull and creditably upon the police force to the members of which he was endeared by his many good traits of character. His funeral took place yesterday afternoon and his remains were followed to their last resting place by the St. Patrick's beneficial society of which he was a member in good standing, and by a detachment of the police force besides a number his sorrowing friends and acquaintances.
