WE LEARN FROM THE BEDFORD SENTINEL THAT MR. SUTHERLAND ROSS AN OLD AND RESPECTABLE CITIZEN OF ROANOKE COUNTY RESIDING IN THE VICINITY OF BIG LICK WAS FURIOUSLY ATTACKED ON THE EVENING OF THE 9TH INSTANT BY A PET BULL OF HIS AND WAS SO BADLY INJURED AS TO CAUSE HIS DEATH IN A FEW HOURS.

WE LEARN FROM THE LOUISVILLE COURIER: ON THURSDAY AFTERNOON MR. WILLIAM RANDALL OF TAYLORSVILLE, SPENCER COUNTY left his home with his family composed of his wife and 3 children. In a small spring wagon with the intention of visiting his BROTHER IN LAW MR. JOHN COOPER  who lives about 10 miles from TAYLORSVILLE. When about 5 miles from the house at a place where the road  which is very narrow passes over a high cliff on the banks of a salt river he attempted to make a short turn in order to keep further from the edge of the cliff. Just as he drew up the lines and was about to pull to the right the horse became

THE FUNERAL OF THE LATE LAMENTED REV. W. E. PELL TOOK PLACE AT RALEIGH NC ON SABBATH LAST. THE SERVICES WERE VERY AFFECTING AND THE ATTENDANCE IS DESCRIBED AS BEING THE LARGEST EVER KNOWN AT A FUNERAL IN THAT CITY.

ON SUNDAY NIGHT  LAST AYOUNG MULATTO BY THE NAME OF WILLIAM JOHNSON BEAT A NEGRO WOMAN BY THE NAME OF POLLY DICKINSON ALIAS SCOTT VERY BADLY FOR WHICH HE WAS ARRESTED AND FINED $10. THE WOMAN SINCE HAS BEEN SPITTING BLOOD AND COMPLAINED GREATLY OF PAINS IN HER CHEST AND BODY AND ON THURS NIGHT SHE DIED UNDER CIRCUMSTANCES WHICH RENDERED THE HLDING OF AN INQUEST NECESSARY.,

IN CURRITUCK COURTHOUSE NC.NOV 21. AFTER A PAINFULL ILLNESS OF SEVERAL MONTHS. LIZZIE MARRION YOUNGEST DAUGHTER OF DR. E. AND ELIZABETH NORTON.

ALICE WILTS DAU. OF JOHN WILTS OF HARRISONBURG WHILE ON HER WAY TO CHURCH SUNDAY LAST, ON HORSEBACK WITH A LITTLE GIRL BEHIND HER WAS THROWN FROM THE SADDLE AND ONE FOOT REMAINING IN THE STIRUP, SHE WAS DRAGGED SOME DISTANCE BEFORE IT BECAME DISENGAGED.  SHE WAS ONLY 19 YEARS OF AGE.

ON TUES NIGHT LAST ABOUT 9PM CAPTAIN ROBERT COLVIN FREIGHT TRAIN WS THROWN FROM THE TRACK JUST AS IT WAS ENTERING THIS PLACE AND COMPLETELY WRECKED TWO OF THE CARS AND KILLED ON COLORED MAN, ALECK WHITE, WHO WAS ON THE TRIAN. IT WAS THOUGHT HE HD GONE TO SLEEP AND FELL OFF UPON THE TRACK AND THE CARS PASSING OVER HIS BODY WERE THROWN OFF. HIS BODY WAS SEVERED ABOUT THE HIPS AND REALTY MANGLED. PER THE SHENANDOAH HERALD.

IN PRINCESS ANN COUNTY ON SAT. DEC 10TH AGE 67. JAMES MOORE. THE DECEASED LEAVES A FAMILY OF 5 KIDS, ONE SISTER, 2 BROTHERS AND VAST NUMBER OF FRIENDS. (NO NAMES GIVEN)

ON THE 11TH OF DEC AT 5:30PM IN RICHMOND OF CONSUMPTION. H.E. ALBERTS AGE 33.

MR. JAMES A. BENNETT AN ASSISTANT IN THE OFFICE OF THE CLERK OF THE SUPERIOR COURT DIED AT HIS RESIDENCE ON STERRET ST ON SAU. MORNING AT TEH AGE OF 29 YEARS. IN THE EARLY PART OF THE LATE WAR HE WAS AN ACTIVE CONFEDERATE AND COMMANED ONE OF THE TORPEDO BOATS ON THE JAMES RIVER. HE WAS A RESIDENT OF NORFOLK  BUT AFTER THE CLOSE OF THE WAR MADE BALTIMORE HIS HOME AND BY HIS URBANE MANNERS AND SOCIAL QUAILITIES MADE A LARGE CIRCLE OF FRIENDS. HIS REMAINS WILL LEAVE FOR NORFOLK  THIS AFTERNOON AND WILL BE ACCOMPANIED BY A COMMITTE OF MOUNT VERNON LODGE NO. 151 OF THE ANCIENT AND FREE AND ACCEPTED ORDER OF MASONS OF WHICH HE WAS A MEMBER.

IT GOES ON TO SAY THAT HE WAS TAKEN TO THE CEMTERY BUT DOESN'T GIVE THE NAME. ALSO THE MAKE A NOTE THAT MR. BENNETT SERVED WITH GALLANTRY BOTH IN THE CONFEDERATE ARMY AND NAVY BUT WAS NOT IN COMMAND OF A TORPEDO BOAT.

DEATH OF A WELL KNOWN NEGRO TOM STONE. AN OLD NEGRO MAN WHO HAS BEEN FOR SEVERAL YEARS PAST ENGAGED IN PEDDLING FISH AND OYSTERS THROUGH THE STREETS AND WAS SOMEWHAT FAMOUS AS A SINGER DIED YESTERDAY MORNING , AS WE LEARN FROM INJURIES INFLICTED BY HIMSELF ONE DAY LAST WEEK OF WHICH NOTICE WAS GIVEN AT THE TIME. THE OLD MAN WAS EVIDENTLY LABORING UNDER MENTAL ABERRATION AND NEGLECTED PRECAUTIONS WHICH MIGHT HAVE SAVED HIS LIFE.

AT HIS RESIDENCE IN PORTSMOUTH ON THURS THE 15TH AT 5AM. AFTER A FEW HOURS OF ILLNESS MR. ARTHUR EMERSON 55TH YEAR OF HIS AGE. THE FUNERAL WILL TAKE PLACE FROM TRINITY CHURCH TODAY AT 12 NOON. FRIDAY.

WE ARE PAINED TO ANNOUNCE THE DEATH OF BENJAMIN RUSSELL CHISMAN ESQ WHO DIED IN HAMPTON ON THE 21ST OF CONSUMPTION IN THE 24TH YEAR OF HIS AGE. HE WAS THE YOUNGEST SON OF COLONEL T. P.L CHISMAN WELL KNOWN IN THIS STATE AND THOUGH A YOUTH DURING THE WAR, SERVED IN THE STAFF DEPARTMENT OF THE ARMY. HE WAS AN EXEMPLARY YOUNG GENTLEMAN AND DIED IN THE COMMUNION OF THE CHURCH LAMENTED AS HE WAS BELOVED BY ALL WHO KNEW HIM.

W.W. WARREN ESQ THE OWNER AND MANAGER OF THE PANORAMA HAD DIED IN CHELSEA MASS ON THE 20TH INSTANT.

DEPARTED THIS LIFE NOV 24 1870. SAMUEL NEWBY AGE 70. HE WAS BORN IN ELIZABETH CITY NC BUT FOR THE LAST 50 YEARS WAS A RESIDENT OF PORTSMOUTH.
